Since I bought it, turned it on and put it under my Christmas tree, I have not had a problem with my cats even going anywhere near the thing! Forget all the other tricks (including hanging bells low on the tree so they'll jingle when the cats rattle it, or purposely hanging ornaments low that they can "have" to play with...the first only works if you're home to hear, and the second only trains them to believe the whole tree is fair game!). The reason this product works so well is that it trains cats to stay away from forbidden places at ALL times...even when you are out of the room, asleep or not at home! I never see the cat up there. It also keeps the dogs out of any area or room i don't want them in. When i first read about this concept on the web, i read about the SSSCAT product by Premier and i came to Amazon to buy it, but i read reviews in which the users reported that there was an older version of the product that had both a sound alarm and the spray of air, with the option to use sound only. SSSCAT was advertised as having both features, but users reported it had air spray only, no alarm. Apparently no one updated the page on Amazon after they discontinued the alarm. There were disappointed reviewers complaining that the product was not correctly described in the ad, and also, that the alarm option was not available anymore. I really wanted the alarm, with the option of sound only. The spray uses up the supply of air pretty fast, and then it costs... After considerable review of the different manufacturers of this type of product I chose Contech specifically because their customer reviews indicated it was a better product, i.e. better quality, performance, etc. compared to the competition. I'll relate my experience and let you be the judge. I ordered two of the StayAway Pet Deterrents and they arrived promptly. The product is easy to assemble and place into immediate use. However the motion sensors on both units proved to be hypersensitive. Instead of limiting their sensing range out to 3 feet (the manufacturer's specifications) they detected movement and activated at a range clear out to 15 feet. So now you can't walk through our living room at all without them activating. I contacted customer service who were very friendly and the rep told me she had not heard of such a problem and would consult with one of their engineers and call me back which she did in a timely fashion. It is pet safe and has a soft, earth-like texture that cats instinctually prefer. Kitty’s Crumble is naturally structured of millions of leach resistant micro-sponges that absorb moisture and trap odors, holding more than four times its weight in liquid. Used Kitty’s Crumble (with solids removed) is a valuable resource with the properties of a peat moss; it is an excellent soil conditioner, compost additive, or may be placed in the green waste bin for municipal recycling. REVISED REVIEW: I've been using Kitty's Crumble for about two or three months now and my original opinion has changed significantly since I've gotten used to it. The main thing to remember is, this is not a clumping litter. So my strategy is now to use half a bag (my litter box is rather large with a dome), which results in about four inches of litter depth to it and just change it every Sunday. That's it. The box doesn't smell, my cat doesn't seem to mind, the litter barely tracks and every week I just dump everything out and start anew. The only real downside I see to this is that I'm using half a bag a week, or 26 bags a year, so that adds up in terms of cost. Since we got our two cats (one in 2006 and one in 2007) we've been having all sorts of litter box problems and trying all sorts of solutions. We finally stumbled across a giant pan (relatively cheap) here on Amazon - which I have also seen locally at Petsmart - the Kitty's Crumble litter, and the iTouchless 1-gallon trash can. The cats have finally started using the box 100% of the time (as opposed to hanging certain parts over the edge while going). They seem to like the texture of Kitty's Crumble. It tracks less than clumping litters and what does track sweeps up easily with a mini dustpan and brush. Then we put a grocery bag in the iTouchless can (inside the bucket). Solids get scooped into the grocery bag every day, and at the end of the week, the solids bag is taken to the garbage bin (the one the trashmen empty) and the used Crumble goes into the bucket. Then the used Crumble goes out into the garden. Less waste, more clean, happy cats, no mess! I purchased a bag of WBCL trying to change to something that would be healthier for my two beloved babies and to help the environment. Within two days of switching my four year old female became ill. After 10 days at the vet's and $1000 later my precious angel was dead from an acute liver failure. I was devastated and bewildered at how this could happen. When my male started showing the same signs I rushed him to the vet and we again starting treating him aggressively for acute liver failure. After hours of research I learned that corn left in a high humidity and high temp climate can lead to the growth of an unbelievably deadly and carcingogenic toxin known as Aflatoxin. This toxin directly attacks the liver and almost always leads to death. My vet doesn't want to get involved and other responses from the company I have seen state that they do not take responsibility for this. I was having problems with my cats ingesting the clay based litters and was looking for an alternative. I spent months and months trying different cat litters before settling on World's Best Cat Litter. Yes, there can be issues with odor control, but that is only a problem if your cat is the type that doesn't bury their business. This litter clumps better than clay based litter and is far less dusty. I've noticed a lot less little paw prints on the furniture, since I made the switch. The clumping power of this litter is so good, that if you are very tidy about scooping (which I am), you only need to do a complete litter change every 3-4 months! I scoop out used litter and replace it with fresh litter, twice daily, and the boxes stay clean for months (and I have 3 cats). I've tried both the original formula and the Extra Strength (multicat) formula and can tell you that there is no difference. If anything the Extra Strength formula tends to be a bit more dusty than the original... I was skeptical at first about switching to corn litter. I thought it wouldn't clump as well as the clay litter and that it wouldn't mask smells. Thankfully, I was wrong. This litter is so much better than the clay litters I was using and it lasts longer too. It clumps quickly and stays clumped so it's easy to scoop. Also, the clumps are smaller so litter isn't wasted which saves me money and offsets the cost of the litter. The odor control is comparable to the clay litter and has an organic smell instead of a harsh perfume. Plus, the corn based litter produces very little dust and the pieces that get tracked out of the box are easy to clean up and don't streak across the tile floor when wet. I can't find a negative thing to say about World's Best Litter. I love this product!
