4.0 out of 5 stars Love to flush, but some stink issues!, March 17, 2006

I *adore* this litter. I started my kitten on it from day 1, so there were no adjustment issues, and I can't comment on that. It clumps exceedingly well, and it is SO nice to be able to flush the cat nasties. I've found that neither the regular nor the extra strength even remotely "cover up" any smells, as there's no perfumey nature to WBCL, but I've never smelled a urine odor from the box. I do choose to add some sprinklable odor control stuff, of some natural brand I can't remember, because the solid waste of new kitten is just too smelly. (Addendum: it's Nil O Litter, and it has the exact same texture as WBCL and is also made of corn cob bits.)

There's a little bit of tracking, but nothing a small mat or hand vacuum won't take care of. Do watch out if you have any moisture near your box (like if you keep it in the bathroom where the floor might get wet) -- I've noticed that if my cat encounters WBCL with wet paws, I find pale footprints that dry to a fine dust alllll... I had been using traditional silica-based scoopable cat litter for years despite some reservations about its potential harmful effects on my and my cats' lungs. I just assumed that the alternatives would be far less convenient. But I actually prefer this product both in terms of quality, convenience, and environmental concerns. It has a pleasant and very mild odor and just "feels" more benign -- the thought of breathing or even ingesting it doesn't trouble me. It took my cats a day or so to get used to it, but I breathe easier (literally and figuratively) knowing that it is nontoxic and environmentally friendly. Although it doesn't clump quite as firmly, it is lighter hence easier to scoop, and doesn't seem to track quite as much. Great stuff!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great litter, but attracts too many new "pets", May 3, 2005
This review is from: World's Best Cat Litter 34-lb bag (Misc.)
I was excited when I bought this litter since my cat has sensitive skin, and this litter works really well for her. I also liked the idea my cat is not exposed to the heavy scents and who-knows-what chemicals in the clay-based litters. Unfortunately, my cat wasn't the only one who liked it -- the litter attracted ants.

By the fourth week, we noticed a small pile of litter by the garage door, maybe 6 feet from the litter box. Small ants were everywhere and they were successfully moving the litter, grain by grain, to a "staging area" where other ants were dragging the little bits into a gap between the floor and the wall. We immediately had to go back to the old litter and move the litter box out of area while we pitched battle with our insect invaders. Once the litter was gone, we had no trouble getting rid of the ants, but it will be a while before I experiment with a food-based litter again.

I live in the suburbs of Chicago, so ants are not uncommon, but... Read more
